Job Summary Provision ofgeneral mental health services (evaluation, treatment and education) to studentathletes who are currently enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippiand a member of an intercollegiate sport team at USM with the potential tosupervise pre-and-post doctoral interns. In addition, the position isresponsible for supporting implementation of philosophies, policies, andprocedures of clinical and sport psychology service operations forstudent-athletes as well as assist with coordination and provision ofconsultation and relevant training to coaches, athletic trainers, and otherathletic department staff. This position should have the ability to understandand comply with state statutes governing the ethical provision of mental healthcare, as well as those rules governing the NCAA and conference.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities - Provide and maintain clinical and sport-performance caseload comprised of currently enrolled student-athletes for both individual, team and group service provision.
- Provide, complete and supervise psychological evaluations to inform diagnostic decision making and treatment planning and to facilitate referrals for psychopharmacological interventions.
- Collaborate with Athletic Academic Support Services on psychoeducational screenings and complete and supervise intellectual and learning disability evaluations to inform requests for academic accommodations.
- Coordinate drug and alcohol assessment and counseling for the Athletic Department in accordance with Southern Miss Athletics departmental policy.
- Work in conjunction with Director in providing consultation and outreach services to coaches, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning, nutrition and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being of individual student-athletes and team members.
- Serve as point of contact for assigned teams and facilitate team workshops based on empirically supported sport psychology principles.
- Enter clinical documentation in electronic medical records system and compile and report data regarding utilization of USM Sports Counseling and Performance psychological evaluation services.
- Work in conjunction with Director to facilitate emergency mental health services when appropriate in collaboration with other campus entities to support holistic health of student-athlete and sport reintegration efforts.
- Coordinate with Director on the service delivery for special cases to include substance use, disordered eating, and severe-persistent mental illness education and treatment.
- Work in conjunction with Director in providing daytime, evening, and weekend crisis intervention and emergency services in situations involving individual student-athletes or teams with support from Student Counseling Services as needed.
- Engage in multidisciplinary collaborations with other campus entities (Moffit Health, Student Counseling Services, Athletic Training, Center for Behavioral Health, Academic Support for Student-Athletes) for the total well-being of the student-athletes.
- Provide supervision to interns, and post-doctoral externs and perform special functions for the department as requested by the Director of Athletics and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications DoctoralDegree (Ph.D., Psy.D.) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology with 2-4+ years inEmerging Adult Population. Competence and experience with intellectual (e.g.,WAIS), personality (e.g., PAI, MMPI), and psychoeducational (e.g., WJ, WRAT)measures and evaluations. 2-4+ years in providing sport performance and clinical servicesfor student-athetes at the collegiate level.
Currentindependent licensure and/or licensure eligible in the State of Mississippiwithin 12-months of hire and maintained for duration of employment. Pleasereview for licensure information inMississippi.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Eclectic knowledge of theoretical approaches to psychotherapy and clinical/counseling psychology.
- Knowledge of sport psychology and performance enhancement.
- Knowledge to ensure all assigned tasks comply with University, Sunbelt Conference, and NCAA rules.
- Knowledge of professional, legal, ethical, and professional standards endorsed by licensing professional organizations.
- Ability to present at local, national, and international conferences while adequately representing Southern Miss Athletics. Competency practicing in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Ability to conceptualize, diagnose and properly treat cognitive, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
- Ability to make accurate judgments concerning the physical, emotional, and educational welfare of student-athletes.
- This position will work non-traditional and irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications Five years or more of experience in the mentalhealth field working with emerging adult population focusing on stressmanagement, substance misuse and alcohol education, eating concerns, crisismanagement, depression, anxiety, grief, identity development, learningdisabilities and other psychological stressors related to injury,rehabilitation and return to sport in competitive athletes. 2-4+ years'post-master's experience providing mental health services to athletes orserving as a primary mental health provider/consultant to a sport organization.Knowledge of community-based mental health resources. Experience providingevidence-based sport performance consultation to athletic teams. Advancedtraining in Sport Psychology, such as certification as a Certified MentalPerformance Consultant (CMPC) as outlined by the Association for Applied SportPsychology (AASP) or equivalent experience.
